XTRAYNER European platform for re-training X-RAY machines to enhance accuracy and efficiency of cross-border customs inspection
Call: FP7-SEC-2012-1 Area: 10.3.4 Border checks
Topic SEC-2012.3.4-1 Research on "automated" comparison of x-ray images for cargo scanning with reference material (use of historic images in an automated environment) to identify irregularities - Capability Project
The objective of this European Customs Inspection Optimiser (CIO) for Redefining Security and Efficiency is to revolutionise customs inspection procedures through the development and maintenance of CIO prototype. By "re-training" scanning machines, the project seeks to progressively enhance their detection accuracy and efficiency, thereby providing reliable support services for customs officers and optimizing security and customs workflow.
To achieve this goal, the project will establish an Internet-specific "semantic-images" database and application repositories, periodically updated with additional images and upgraded with advanced logical intelligence. The CIO platform will leverage these resources to provide controllers with reference pictures for comparison and offer near real-time automatic services for informing, alerting, and alarming personnel based on the detected Sensing Event (SED) class and associated risk.
Collaborating closely with customs officers, the CIO platform will be designed and developed to meet the specific needs of customs inspection processes. Real-usage pilot networks will be deployed to validate acceptance, evaluate features and performance, and assess the socio-economic impact of the solution.
The innovative solution delivered by this project will not only optimize customs inspection procedures but also pave the way for a new ICT market for scanners and inspection machines, benefiting customs officers' bodies and stakeholders across Europe. This initiative ensures continuous development, sustainable extension, and widespread adoption of cutting-edge customs inspection technologies throughout the region.

Call identifier: FP7-ICT-2011-7/CP-FP-INFSO
Objective ICT-2011.1.3 Internet-connected objects
a) Targeted outcome An open networked architecture for Internet-connected objects
IoSS develops, using openly available technological components and closely following the architectual reference models of the IERC and the Open Group Architecture Framework (TOGAF), a prototype of an Internet-based open platform combining service-oriented and event-driven architectures. IoSS places and connects in the same virtual/real plane sensing objects to facilitate their autonomy, cooperation and associations to compose new Internet services.

Intelligent Objects Network for Home care for Ageing People
Most ageing people and people with age related impairments prefer to live at their homes as long as possible. It is also the most cost effective solution for the communities responsible for them. But living alone is often difficult, unsafe and lonely. The goal of the project is to improve the life quality of the ageing people with technology.
We develop digital TV towards a personal communication assistant, entertainment, and emergency channel. The TV will be augmented with movement sensors, home robotics, intelligent domestic appliances, and smart objects.
These additions will make it possible to collect useful information about everyday life, alert help if necessary, keep company, show entertainment based on personal preferences, and help in contacts with the outside world.
The idea to use Digi TV is based on the results on the Finnish national research project "Virike" that showed that that TV was the most familiar communication
channel for ageing and disabled persons and that ageing people benefit from speech, textual and video communication possibilities. In our project we use
these findings to develop methods that can prolong the independent living and increase the feeling of safety, supply entertainment, social contacts and company.

Programme: Citizens and Governance in a Knowledge Based Society Second Call; FP6-2004-CITIZENS-5. Citizens and Governance in a knowledge-based society. development models to meet combined societal and economic objectives.
Type of instrument: Specific Targeted Research Project (STREP)
OS4EU will analyse, define and test the initial elements of a new model of socio-economic development for the knowledge based society founded on the values of the Open Source (OS) movement: its philosophy, concepts and practices as well as its technology solutions (software, standards, contents).
OS4EU will first identify the socio-economic and governance preconditions, processes and impacts of the adoption of OS products/services in public and private organisations at local and regional levels.
We will focus on the different actors and their evolving roles and relationships, OS-based culture and sociology, and the effects of collaborative dynamics and end-user / citizens participation.
OS4EU will leverage its intimate understanding of end- and middle-users across old and new Europe, having integrated them as core project participants, mapping the participative OS model. This bottom-up approach, considering different priorities, conditions, deployments and impacts at all levels, will enable OS4EU to extrapolate a general implementation and development model for a more efficient and universal application of OS concepts in, across and beyond Europe. The model will be tested in several pilot studies, refined and valorised through dissemination and training activities, with best practices and policy recommendations for private and public decision makers.
This knowledge will lead to establishing key understandings of a systematic OS implementation framework and development model whose benefits will be measured and validated in terms of (1) higher levels of sustainable local development (employment, enterprise), (2) greater social and economic cohesion across the EU and (3) improved pathways to and living conditions in the knowledge based society.

CONSEN (Coordinated Open Neural Space of European info-services e-Centres Net) is a proposed model for e-learning, e-working, e-living and e-Informing.
CONSEN envisions serving simultaneously “anybody” from “anywhere” encompassing maximum standards with an emphasis on multilingual facilities and multicultural benefits. Such a network will go a long way to promoting the European e-community. The potential benefits from establishing such an Open digital Info-services Space are enormous meeting head-on the current challenges confronting the European communities.
The basic concept behind the CONSEN open space is very simple: When individuals and organisations gain free and simplified access to an integrated open base of information, services, and platforms and are free to integrate and modify them the whole resource environment evolves. By satisfying their needs users and resource providers enhance and upgrade the system.
Unlimited end-user participation will be a source of innovation.
